Founding Years (1958-1969)
The story of Kountry Kraft begins with heart, hard work, and a simple gift that sparked a legacy. What started in a small family garage in rural Pennsylvania grew into a family-owned cabinet maker known for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. During these early years, Helen and Elvin Hurst built more than cabinetry — they built a reputation for honesty, precision, and personalized service. From humble beginnings, Kountry Kraft laid the foundation for what would become one of Pennsylvania’s most trusted names in custom handcrafted cabinetry.
It all began when Helen Hurst gifted her husband, Elvin, a table saw for Christmas. What started as a simple gesture soon became the foundation of a family legacy.
In April 1959, Helen and Elvin Hurst Sr. founded Kountry Kraft in a small garage with a vision of crafting quality cabinetry for local builders. Their first sale went to George Weaver of New Holland — the start of many enduring relationships.
As word spread, Kountry Kraft expanded four times within just a few years — out the front, back, and sides of the garage — even adding a loading dock and showroom to meet increasing demand.
GROWTH & EXPANSION
(1970–1999)
The following decades marked a time of transformation for Kountry Kraft. As demand for its custom cabinetry grew, the company expanded its facilities, adopted new technology, and deepened relationships with builders and dealers across the country.
Through recessions and recoveries, the Hursts remained steadfast in their commitment to excellence, innovation, and family values.
What began as a small local business evolved into a respected custom cabinetry manufacturer in Pennsylvania, recognized nationwide for its superior craftsmanship and enduring dedication to quality.
With continued growth came new additions, culminating in a 90-by-200-foot expansion that doubled the size of the facility. Kountry Kraft had transformed from a family garage into a thriving manufacturing plant.
The recession hit hard, and orders stopped overnight. Elvin sold nearly everything he owned — including the company plane — to keep Kountry Kraft alive. His determination and faith saw the company through its most difficult chapter.
A 19,000-square-foot addition brought in new technology and modern equipment. With more space, production became more efficient, and night shifts were no longer needed. That same year, Helen retired, and Dee joined the company’s leadership.
MODERN ERA
(2000–TODAY)
As Kountry Kraft entered the new millennium, the company carried its tradition of craftsmanship into the future.
Led by the next generation of the Hurst family, Kountry Kraft continues to blend time-honored woodworking techniques with cutting-edge cabinetry technology.
Today, the company’s custom cabinetry can be found in homes and commercial spaces across the country, reflecting a perfect balance of heritage and innovation. More than 65 years later, Kountry Kraft remains a proud family-owned cabinetry manufacturer — a testament to resilience, artistry, and the belief that true excellence is built one cabinet at a time.
Elvin Jr. and Dee officially took the helm, guiding Kountry Kraft into a new century while preserving the same craftsmanship and care that started it all.
As the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted industries worldwide, Kountry Kraft once again demonstrated resilience, keeping operations moving and supporting employees through the challenges.
